There are many reasons I use professional skin care. I was an aesthetician for many years and I have seen the quality and the results. Read on and see if I can’t make you a convert. (Or am I preaching to the choir?)
Reason #1 (and perhaps the most important reason) I believe in professional skincare is: I believe in the professionals behind it. Not just the scientists working to create the best formulas but the wonderful aestheticians that give amazing facials, know skin and make recommendations that you can count on. They have expert training and the experience to understand your skin, maybe even better than you! Truly, I have seen many people that misunderstood what their skin needed or were frustrated because they weren’t getting results after buying endless products from the 547,839 products at the drug store. If you have a drawer full of unused products (the beauty waste-land) you will understand the value of getting it right the first time. With professional advice, you will most likely do that. My advice? Don’t waste your money at the drug store on the wrong products, let your aesthetician use their expertise to help you find what you really need.
Wanna hear a story? Of course, you do… Once upon a time, I was at a training session. The training was also attended by a rude dermatologist, his well-dressed dermatologist partner and his wife who was WAY too fond of Botox and filler. The arrogant dermatologist kept questioning the instructor, seemingly to show us “lesser-thans” just how smart he was. Starting his question with “So, you’re trying to tell me…” he clearly painted himself as the villain! The instructor was very knowledgeable and polite and answered his questions (once it was something about oxygen creation in the cell via the Kreb’s cycle – very scientific) And then that villain asked a real question… No word of a lie, he asked the instructor how one tells the difference between oily and dry skin. As heads swivelled and mouths dropped open all around the room, our outspoken, Quebecois instructor was rendered speechless! Aren’t dermatologists skincare experts? Don’t they know way more than aestheticians? Not about skincare they don’t. When our instructor regained her composure, she answered his stupid question. The moral of the story is… aestheticians are the best source for knowledge about skincare. Dermatologists are experts in their field, skin disease and disorder but if you are looking for care advice, seek out an aesthetician!
Reason #2: professional skin care companies employ scientists and invest in research. They spend their money on finding new ways to get product deep in the skin, finding new naturally occuring molecules that slow aging, developing new products that mimic nature or slow muscular contractions at the cellular level. High tech stuff! They don’t spend their money hiring actresses to promote their products. They don’t pay for glossy magazine ads, or any other ad for that matter. Money goes to research and quality ingredients. My advice: trust the science not the actress (she is an actress, after all)
Reason #3: “A little goes a long way” sounds like a sales pitch. It isn’t though. I no longer work in the industry and I have no stake in promoting professional skincare. But I do! Truly, a little goes a long way. The products are more concentrated than drug store brands, so while you may pay more ml for ml, some of that is accounted for in the amount you will use. Generally, I found that professional products lasted 3 months for my clients and myself. Also, with professional products, there is less chance of skin irritation or adverse reactions due to the quality of all the ingredients and the lack of filler. Professional products are also pH adjusted, products that aren’t can leave the skin vulnerable to free radicals and bacterial invasion, yikes! Finally, as I mentioned, professional products are able to penetrate the skin where drug store brands cannot. So even though they may cost more ml for ml, I believe professional products are a better buy.
One more thought for the road: Skin is the only organ that we can treat topically, so we like to think that good skincare is what we apply to the skin, but don’t forget we are also taking care of our skin when we exercise and eat right!
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!
