When I get older, I want to be a cool old lady. I want to have style, panache. I want to stay current and curious. I want to know what the “kids” are into and be able to relate to my grandchildren (although I might be 80 when they are teens, if I end up with grandchildren at all)
Basically, I wanna be her:
I have just ordered Advanced Style by Ari Seth Cohen. It looks very inspirational!
Here is a little summary article if you want to have a look: Advanced Style – 26 Stylish Seniors Who Don’t Wear Old-people clothes
Not too long ago a little voice inside my head said “You’re too old to wear that” and then a slightly louder, slightly sassier voice replied, “The HECK you say!” Why is there a age limit on clothes? I hope that nobody recognizes the expression “Mutton dressed as lamb” anymore!
There have been times in my life when I gave up on style. Times when I was too tired to fuss or just didn’t have enough time. There was I time when I was too broke to afford clothes I liked. I shopped mostly clearance racks and second hand; I was limited by what was available. I found that completely demoralizing because I like clothes, I like having something nice to wear. In my mind, it sends a message about who you are on the inside. (I know some people just aren’t into clothes and that’s a-okay. I’m not saying everyone has to be like me.)
I lost my style for a while when I wasn’t working. Guilt over spending money, no “reason” to put together a nice outfit. But really, I am reason enough, am I not? If it makes me happy, isn’t it worth the extra time, effort and money? I think so.
Maybe we lose our style because there is little inspiration for stylish women over 50. So I follow @goodbyecroptop and @advancedstyle. Do you have any you follow?
Anyway, I have decided not to fall into the trap of giving up my style. I’ll probably never be a terribly eccentric old lady because that’s not me now. But I’m gonna stay a little sassy, preppie with a twist, if you will.
You in?
Yes? Well follow along then, I’m going to keep posting fashions and don’t you dare tell yourself “I’m too old for that” Below I have put together a few outfits that are stylish but not crazy. We don’t have to go full on Mrs. Roper just yet! All of the items should be pretty comfy to wear, including the shoes. Clothing is from Nordstrom and Simons.
