If you have kids that are heading off to post secondary school, things can be a little overwhelming! Don’t worry, I am here to help! I remember a few things from back in the dark ages when I went to school but I grilled my nieces who are living the dorm life now and got all their best suggestions to come up with “Dorm Must Haves You May Not Know You Need” I tried to stay away from the stuff that you know because there are lots of lists on line. This my friends is the inside scoop! Below are items you may not know you need for dorm life…

Command Hooks because you need a designated place to hang your key. Buy the multi pack, they won’t go to waste!

Ethernet Adaptor (for MacBooks) Users of laptops will need this adaptor (or something like it) to connect to the internet in their room, this one is specific to Macs. They are sometimes for sale at the dorm but buy it now and save $$$

For PC Laptop

Quick Dry Odour Resistant Towel (Mango), Also available in Blue and Rainbow Because damp towels are not pleasant and when you are too busy for laundry, quick dry towels don’t get stinky as fast.

Smart Pen because this pen is amazing! Not a NEED but super helpful. Attention ADHD students! This is especially helpful for you! This pen records what is being said and if you want to hear ANY PORTION OF THE LECTURE you simply place the pen on your notes to the place you were writing and it PLAYS IT BACK! Geez I wish they had this back when I was at school! It’s not cheap though… and you need the notebooks (or one) seen below. But when you are already spending a fortune on school, you don’t want to miss anything the professor says!

Compact Umbrella– because you are no longer “too cool” to actually use one

Shower Caddy– because it is essential for carting everything to the bath room and convenient when you come home for a weekend. Definitely get one with holes for drainage.

Backrest Pillow because you will study on your bed and your back will get sore. This will save your back and comes with a matching blanket! (On sale now)

Desk Lamp Because if your school provides one, sorry, but it’s gonna suck. This one is adorable and reminds me of a certain cartoon lamp

Washable Rug, becauseLord alone knows the last time a dorm rug was actually clean, so the washable rug gives a clean space to start your day off right

Rag Rug, another option

Noise Cancelling Headphones because you love your roomie, but nobody is quiet all the time

Desk Fan because dorm rooms are always too hot. Buy now because lots of stores don’t stock them in September plus you will likely get it on sale

Filtering Water Bottle Especially if you are off to school in Waterloo because that water is awful!

Water Filter Pitcher

Noise Cancelling Ear Plugs for sleep, because, dorm noise. These come in a variety of colours

Shower Sandals Need I say more?

Large Paper Wall Calendar PAPER because life gets busy, new months get written down late and things get missed. You can also flip ahead and peek at the week to come during the last week of the month and you can’t do that with a dry erase.

Pour Over Coffee Maker One Cup (inexpensive) because caffeine. If your dorm doesn’t allow coffee makers, but they do allow kettles…

or This Super Cute One

Clothes drying rack Get one that is foldable, the over the door style is great too but make sure your door will close (avoid Mainstays from Walmart for this reason) This one is cost effective.
