Once upon a time my husband and I put in an offer to puchase an Arts and Crafts house. Oh the charm! Yes all the floors were sloping, that’s why our offer was conditional on a structural assessment. (This is actually a true story, not a fairy tale) But oh the charm. Yes it had been neglected, but ohh the charm, the wood work. Sigh. Anyway, the owners were not computer savy but they accepted our offer verbally until they could get to their realtor’s office. (Read: THEY GAVE US THEIR WORD – this will come up again) We were so excited! Pending some good news from the structural engineer, she was ours!! The woodwork (did I mention it?) was mostly unpainted. Swoon. The staircase had a built in bench like so:
There were pillars leading to the living room similar to the above. There was even a secret back room! A SECRET BACK ROOM! I kid you not! It was the stuff dreams are made of (if you ignore the structural problems) So naturally, I had the whole place decorated and named and the biggest, most exciting part was that, in keeping with the home’s period, I was going to make the secret back room into a speakeasy! I had a pinterest board and everything. It was going to be so cool! The door was going to be disguised as a large piece of art and when you stepped inside… moody, prohibition era magic my friend, moody prohibition era magic.
But alas, this is not a fairy tale, and the owners ironically recieved another offer after months of inactivity and they ignored the fact that we had a verbal agreement and accepted the other offer. I am still trying to let that one go. So my dreams of a ski house with a magical prohibition era speakeasy died a sad little death. Sniff…
So, taking lemons and making lemonade, here is a VERY COOL (support me on this friends, my ego is still suffering) representation of a speakeasy bar. Maybe you can make one. I’m still licking my wounds grieving. Below you will find 3 designs, each one less true to form in case you are encorporating this into your home and you aren’t hiding it in a SECRET BACK ROOM.

- Wallpaper – An art deco dream
- Avalon Rattan Bar – Is this not the coolest bar you have ever seen? I am SWOONING!!
- Arilelle Velvet Chairs
- Vernway Accent Tables
- Vouge print
This one is toned down a bit. Still some very Art Deco pieces but it could work in a traditional home.
- paint
- Frankwell Bookcase
- Majaci Console Table/Bar
- Jacquelyne Accent Chairs
- Wynora Round Cocktail Table
- Art
This would work well in a modern space. I love the brass, the art deco bar cart which is balance by the simple lines and materials of the cabinet. The chairs look very comfy for sipping a cocktail and I love the sassy flapper girl!
