How to spend a weekend at the Cottage

Spread the love

We spent a recent weekend at the cottage. Pure bliss, margaritas on the deck, sunsets, cool dips in the lake. And if you believe that, my friend, I am guessing that you don’t have a cottage.

There is an old adage that says, if you see someone relaxing on the deck of a cottage…they are a guest !

Here is how it really went… Thursday: get ahead on laundry and house cleaning because you will be away.

Friday: decide what you will eat, shop accordingly, also buy easy meals for the kids because they won’t come with you anymore. Pack clothes, food that isn’t refrigerated, shoes, shovel, level, paint, paint brushes, rollers, cement adhesive and anything else you’ll need for your projects. Make a list of “fridge stuff” so you don’t forget. Pack sunscreen, pack for the dog. Pack swimsuit -just in case.

Saturday: Load the car, pack and load cold food. Head out! Realize you forgot something, return home, get items. Set out again! Woot! Cottage time!

Arrive at cottage, pull weeds, trim bushes, make dinner, wash dishes (by hand). As the sun sets over the water (and out of your view), scrape and prime garage door for paint. Fall into bed exhausted.

Saturday: walk dog, paint garage door, sweat through clothes. Shower, eat lunch, feed dog some of your lunch (only at the cottage), walk dog again. Husband moves aproximately 162,894 bricks for fire pit from the pallet to the intended fire pit location.

Build fire pit:

  • Place bricks to determine lay out.
  • Remove bricks, dig down, place brick, test level, fail
  • Remove brick, move dirt, replace brick, level again.
  • Place second brick, test level, fail
  • Remove brick, move dirt, replace brick, level.
  • Repeat 162,892 times.
  • Sweat through clothes.
  • Make dinner, wash dishes by hand, fall into bed exhausted.

Sunday: shower, pack up your clean and dry swimsuit and sweaty, paint-smeared clothes, clean cottage and make beds with fresh linens and chocolates on the pillows, place logs in new fire pit and otherwise prep so the renters will have a blissful stay while husband walks dog and cuts grass.

Overhear husband muttering something about “work camp.” Head home a happy camper cottager.
