Quick and Easy Patio Privacy Makeover

Spread the love

We recently did a quick little makeover on our patio. This little patio is tucked between the house and the garage. This patio is set up with “conversation” furniture with plants surrounding it on 3 sides. It also has a little water feature, a fire table and string lights. It is a great little retreat for reading or just chillin’. My husband has taken over the gardening in this area and his plantings have made it a little oasis! We have a climbing hydrangea that you can see in the picture below and it is THRIVING! However, the one thing it is lacking is privacy. As the cedars between us and our nieghbour grow taller, they become more like trees, with less lower foliage.

So we headed to Canadian Tire and picked up the Naturae Willow expandable trellis in Laurel (not sponsored)

In the picture below, we are part way through the installation. This is when we realized that we would need 3 panels, not just the two we bought. That’s how it goes right? So we headed back to Canadian tire, we also picked up some bamboo supports as we were learning as we went. We supported the trellis by hanging it from branches above and by securing it to the bamboo hoops we found in the garden center. The trellis comes with dark green zip ties to attach it to a support, they aren’t very sturdy though, so I would recommend buying some heavy duty ties.

All in all, this was a very simple and quick fix and we are happy with the end result. There are a variety of these trellises out there. There are different sizes and different leaves (both shape and material) and some come with built in lights. We used 3 trellises that were 40″ (100 cm) x 80″ (200 cm) and the leaves on ours are plastic. There are products with fabric leaves, which look more realistic. In our situation, I think the plastic is a good choice as they seem more durable and we won’t be too close to them. Also, we plan to do more planting in this area so they will be disguised. If you were putting this on a small balcony or somewhere where you will be very close to the trellis, I think the fabric leaves would be preferable.

We supported them with 2 bamboo hoops per trellis and they are also hung from branches above. As I mentionded, I would also recommend buying some dark green zip ties that are a little more heavy duty.

We also trimed our crazy hydrangea, edged the garden and picked up some new outdoor cushions to replace our old, tired ones. Here’s how it all turned out…

I took a couple of shots at night, but of course, you can never capture the charm of lights twinkiling in the night with a camera, so you’ll just have to stop by some evening!

Here is a link to a similar Trellis, with mini lights. It is an affiliate link, which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you, but you can find them at any hardware store!
