Well thanks a lot Covid. If the last 22 months haven’t been enough, you’ve gone and ruined my Christmas plans. My family had plans to get together at a rental that will sleep all (17!) of us but that has obviously gone down the proverbial drain. We had plans Covid! Plans! We were going to cook together, eat lots, play games, make gingerbread houses, catch up and get dressed up all fancy (we were going to be there at New Years) After the recent provincial announcement there was some initial wailing and beating of chests followed by deciding to do what we can. We started with a date to make our gingerbread houses during a video call. We are also going to open presents together on video chat and I thought maybe some of you are in the same boat. So if you can’t gather with your family, here are some ways to spend time together…
Have a PJ and movie party. Curl up on the couch in your snuggliest PJ’s and tune in with friends or family. Click here for an article with details on providers and how to set it up.
Play on-line games. Don’t skip past this one if you are not a gamer, You won’t believe the options! They had me at “House Flipper” Yes, you read that right! Download an app called Steam and select from a TON of games! Some have a fee, some are free.
Play on-line board games. On example is “Code Names” We have the physical version of Code Names and it is a great game! The object is to give a clue to your teammates, letting them know which cards are yours without them choosing cards from the opposing team click here for more on-line board games
Make gingerbread houses or sugar cookies.
Choose a recipe and cook together.
Create a trivia game or use one you have on hand. Try a quiz to see how well your friends or family know you. Google “create your own quiz” or “create your own quiz for friends”
In the words of Stephen Stills “Love the one(s) you’re with” Your plans may have changed but that may be giving you an opportunity to slow down and spend some real quality time with immediate family. Talk the teens into a winter walk (in the afternoon of course). Introduce littles to something new. Ask some open ended questions to get people talking. Click here for some questions to get you started.
It doesn’t really matter what you do, so long as you find a way to spend time together. Having something to plug away at as you chat just makes it easier when you are not face to face.
No matter how you end up celebrating, I wish you very happy holidays!
