Below, please enjoy some 80’s eye candy… take your time. Yum! This dining room has all the 80’s accoutrements, everything any self-respecting home owner in the 80’s would want. Punched tin pie safe? Check. Stencilling? Check. Ginormous dried floral arrangements? Check. Witches broom? Wait, what? Not sure that was a thing even in the 80’s. There was actually a “thing” where you had parties and enhanced “decorative brooms” with artificial flowers. So, I guess this isn’t too far off.
All’s I’m saying is… this dining room was bodacious! Laugh not my friends, someday people will laugh at kitchens that currently garner expressions like “giving me all the feels” Buuuut, that doesn’t mean this room isn’t ready for a refresh.
Here’s what I would do…
First, I would strip the beautiful wide-plank floor and white wash them. Then, I’d create a banquette seat under the window with a farmhouse table and cross-back chairs. Replace the pie-safe with a curve-topped storage cabinet which echos the curve over the fireplace. I’d keep the beam but replace the light fixture and center it over the new dining area. Finally, I would add two small but cozy chairs by the fire where the table was. Add in highly textured throw cushions and a wicker basket to up the cozy factor and a plant because every room needs a plant. Below is a (very) rough sketch to give you the idea. Please don’t go all mean girl on me, I know it’s wonky.
